
Each year approximately 2 million eye-related injuries occur in the United States. 38,000 of those are sports-related. Fortunately, about 90 percent of those are only temporary or are able to be reversed. The estimated rate of eye injury ranges from 8.2 to 13 per 1000 of the U.S. population. Those under the age or 39 tend to be at the greatest risk of preventable eye injuries. Some basic tips can help prevent or reduce the risk of eye-related injuries, with annual costs estimated at over $10 billion annually out of the $2.3 trillion spent on health care each year in the United States.
